1. The Pope resigns


Pope Benedict XVI resigned on February 11, 2013. He was the first pope to resign since Pope Gregory XII in 1415. He claimed that the reason he decided to resign was his old age. On March 13, 2013 it was announced that Jorge Mario Bergoglio would be made the 266th Pope of the Catholic Diocese. Jorge picked the Saint name Francis after Saint Francis of Assisi. He is the first Pope from america. Hr is also the first Jesuit Pope. he is known for his humbleness and kindness such as not using the popemobile to show humility. He has traded in the popemobile that has been used since 1981 and instead rides in a white mercedes jeep and gets out to greet the crowds. he advocates for the environment. He blessed 35,000 harley davidson riders when they were in attendance at the St. Peter Square in Vatican City.

I picked this news story because it is important to me because I am a member of a catholic church and I think it is good to know what is going on in our leadership and have some background knowledge about it.




2. Kate and William’s Royal Baby


the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge became new parents on July 22, 2013. He was born at St. Mary’s Hospital in London, England He weighed 8 lbs 6 oz. His name is Prince George Alexander Louis and is third in line to the throne. He was born the same year as the Diamond Jubilee. While Kate was pregnant, she had the burden of morning sickness. Prince George was christened at St. James's Palace in October 2013. It was his first public appearance in three months. It was also announced during this time that George would have seven godparents.



this is an important news story to me because it is world news and something I’ll remember in the future.



3. The Boston Marathon Bombing

At the Boston marathon on April 15, 2013, two homemade pressure cooker bombs went off at the finish line, which killed 3 people and injured 264 others. The FBI found surveillance images and video. The suspects were then identified as the Tsarnaev brothers. Shortly after the images were released the suspects allegedly killed a police office, stole a SUV and had a gunfire fight with Watertown police. Which during this one brother was shot and killed. The other was wounded taken to hospital and then passed away.



I picked this story because it was big in the news and I remember sitting down and watch the news with my family. It was devastating.


4. Clothing manufacturing building in Bangladesh collapses




The eight story building collapsed on April 24 killing 1,127 people. Rescuers and emergency response crews searched for more than 19 days. One survivor was found alive after surviving under the rubble for 17 days. Surviving workers then protested in the streets against the poor working conditions that were in that building. Bangladesh has one of the worlds lowest wages. this brought worldwide awareness to what is going on in the world

I picked this because it makes me think how lucky we are and all the things we take for granted.


5. Oscar Pistorius arrested for murder




South African Oscar Pistorius, a double amputee who inspired fans around the world at the 2012 Olympic games. He claimed there was an intruder in has house but instead four bullets were sent into his girlfriend, Reeva Steenkamp. His trial is scheduled for March 2014.



i picked this because it's something that got a lot of publicity.
